Spiegel leads No. 7 Wolverines over No. 10 Panthers

DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team played its second game in two nights at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena, coming away with a similar result as the first.

Led by a four-goal outburst in the middle period, the No. 7 Wolverines took a 6-1 victory over No. 10 Davenport University in a nonconference matchup Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena. UM-Dearborn moves to 3-1 overall this season.

Leading the way offensively was Andrew Spiegel (JR/Riverview, MI) who scored a highlight real goal in the second period. While killing a penalty, Spiegel lined up for the faceoff in the offensive zone and shot the puck as soon as it was dropped by the linesman and found the top corner short side to beat the Davenport goaltender. The score established a three-goal cushion for the home team before the end of the second. Spiegel also scored the first goal of the game.

The Wolverines received goals from Nic LaBurn (JR/Northville, MI), Andrew Palushaj (SR/Livonia, MI), Kevin Bechard (JR/Trenton, MI) and Christian Ramage (SO/Taylor, MI). Davenport's lone goal came off a shorthanded tally in the second period.

Justin Dunn (SO/Trenton, MI) finished with two assists, while Bechard, LaBurn, Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, MI), Kyle Schnettler (SO/Metamora, Mich.), Marcus McSweeney (SR/Chandler, Ariz.) and Silas Johnson (FR/Calgary, Alberta, Canada) each added a helper for UM-Dearborn.

The Wolverines outshot the Panthers 51-27 and capitalized on three power play opportunities. Starting in goal for the Wolverines was Thomas Proudlock (JR/Southgate, MI). He made 26 saves to earn his second victory of the season.

UM-Dearborn will play its third game in three nights at Lawrence Tech at 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the Southfield Sports Arena in Southfield, Mich.
