UM-Dearborn advances to GLCHL title game

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team will play for its third straight Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League Playoff title after the Wolverines topped Davenport University in the semifinals on Friday at the Ice Cube in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The No. 8 Wolverines scored two in the first period and got an insurance tally in the second to take a 3-1 win over the No. 14 Panthers. The win is the fourth in four games for UM-Dearborn against Davenport this season.

UM-Dearborn is 23-4-2 this season and will take on No. 2 Adrian College in the GLCHL Championship game in a rematch from last season's final at 2:30 pm Saturday at the Ice Cube. Adrian advanced to the finals with a 5-0 win over Kent State University earlier on Friday.

The game will be the last for the Wolverines as a member of the GLCHL, with UM-Dearborn set to move to the NAIA next season.

Silas Johnson (FR/Calgary, Alberta, Canada) got the Wolverines on the board first with a goal on assists from John Barlow (JR/Shelby Twp, MI) and Conor Cunningham (FR/Trenton, MI) at the 9:13 mark of the first. Bechard scored in the final seconds of the opening period to make it 2-0, with assists going to Kyle Schnettler (SO/Metamora, Mich.) and Justin Dunn (SO/Trenton, MI).

Davenport cut the Wolverine lead in half with a second-period goal, but Michael Hodgson (FR/Trenton, MI) scored with just over two minutes left in the middle frame to put UM-Dearborn back up two. Marcus McSweeney (SR/Chandler, Ariz.) picked up the lone assist on the Hodgson goal.

Thomas Proudlock (JR/Southgate, MI) made 45 saves on 46 shots to earn the win in net for UM-Dearborn.
