Wolverines split series at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team returned to action against Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League rival Western Michigan University for a doubleheader over the weekend at Wings West Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The No. 5 Wolverines rolled the Stallions 7-2 in the opener on Friday, but WMU returned the favor, topping UM-Dearborn 5-2 in the finale on Saturday. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 14-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the GLCHL this season.

UM-Dearborn got the scoring started early in the first game, with Troy Saunders (JR/Canton, Mich.) and Kevin Bechard (JR/Trenton, MI) each finding the back of the net for the Wolverines in the first period. After WMU cut the deficit in half before the end of the first, UM-Dearborn scored five straight to pull away.

The run included two goals from Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, MI), while Bechard added his second of the game. Christian Ramage (SO/Taylor, MI) and Justin Dunn (SO/Trenton, MI) each added a tally for UM-Dearborn, which got assists from Silas Johnson (FR/Calgary, Alberta, Canada), Sean McLaren (FR/Oakville, ON), Jared Dedenbach (JR/Warren, MI) and Saunders. Thomas Proudlock (JR/Southgate, MI) made 38 saves on 40 shots in the win.

Groat scored both UM-Dearborn goals in the game on Saturday, but the Stallions scored the final four of the game to escape with the win.

UM-Dearborn returns home to take on No. 15 Davenport University on Toastmasters Free Pizza Night at 7:30 pm on Jan. 26 at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
