Wolverines open GLCHL series with win over EMU

DEARBORN, Mich. - The No. 8 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team rolled to its third straight win, defeating Eastern Michigan University in a Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League matchup on Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The Wolverines scored the first four and the final five goals of the game to top the Eagles 9-2. The victory moves UM-Dearborn to 12-3-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in the GLCHL.

Troy Saunders (JR/Canton, Mich.) got the scoring starting as he found the back of the net from the blue line on assists from John Barlow (JR/Shelby Twp, MI) and Andrew Spiegel (JR/Riverview, MI). The power-play goal was the first of three for the Wolverines on eight attempts with the man-advantage.

Down 4-0, EMU fought back with two goals in the second period. The Wolverines kept the offense pressure on and put the game out of reach after Justin Dunn (SO/Trenton, MI) scored on the breakaway to regain a three-goal lead late in the second period.

Kevin Bechard (JR/Trenton, MI) led the way offensively with two goals and one assist, while Nic LaBurn (JR/Northville, MI), Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, MI) and Dunn each finished with one goal and two helpers. Zack Nichols, Silas Johnson (FR/Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Conor Cunningham (FR/Trenton, MI) also scored for the Wolverines. Kyle Schnettler (SO/Metamora, Mich.) and Spiegel added two assists each and Thomas Proudlock (JR/Southgate, MI) made 20 saves in the win.

The Wolverines will continue GLCHL action against the Eagles at 7 pm Saturday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube in Ann Arbor, Mich. The game will be the last until after the new year for UM-Dearborn.
