Wolverines remain perfect in WHAC with sweep of Saints

BYRON CENTER, Mich. - The No. 7 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team completed the series sweep over Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Aquinas College Saturday. The 5-1 victory over the Saints keeps the Wolverines perfect against WHAC competition.

The Wolverines controlled the game offensively putting 49 shots on goal and scoring four power play goals, improving to 11-3-2 on the season and 4-0 against WHAC opponents.

Leading the way offensively was Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, MI) with one goal and two assists. Groat scored the first of the night and assisted on the game winning goal that was also scored on the power play by Kevin Bechard (JR/Trenton, MI). The Wolverines later added a third power play goal from Andrew Spiegel (JR/Riverview, MI) to jump out to a 3-0 lead through two periods.

After Aquinas got on the board in the third, UM-Dearborn regained a three-goal lead shortly after and add another tally in the closing minutes.

Justin Dunn (SO/Trenton, MI) and Nic LaBurn both finished with a goal and an assist each, while Conor Cunningham (FR/Trenton, MI) recorded two assists and Justin Berezinski (FR/Lansing, MI) added one. Adam Ranck (SO/West Bloomfield, MI) made 28 saves in the win.

The Wolverines host Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League rival Eastern Michigan University at 7:30 pm Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
