Wolverines take shootout win over Panthers

DEARBORN, Mich. - The No. 8 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team capitalized on three power-play opportunities to take control in the second period against No. 16 Davenport University Panthers in a Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League matchup Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The Wolverines led 4-3 at the end of the second and added a goal early in the third to go up by two. The Panthers rallied to tie the score before the end of regulation to send the game to overtime.

The game remained tied after the extra frame and headed to a shootout, which was won by the Wolverines 1-0 to give UM-Dearborn a 6-5 victory. The win pushes the Wolverines to 15-4-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the GLCHL.

At 15:54 on the middle frame, Justin Dunn (SO/Trenton, MI) scored a diving goal in the crease to pull the Wolverines within one before Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, MI) scored to tie the game, both goals coming with the man-advantage. Dunn gave the Wolverines their first lead of the game just before the end of the second, while a second goal from Groat made it 5-3 just 32 seconds into the third.

Thomas Proudlock (JR/Southgate, MI) stood tall in the overtime period stopping six shots and finishing the game with 46 saves. Marcus McSweeney (SR/Chandler, Ariz.) scored the lone shootout goal to secure the win.

Dunn recorded two goals and an assist to lead the way offensively while Groat added two goals as well. The first goal of the night for the Wolverines came from Kyle Schnettler (SO/Metamora, Mich.), while McSweeney added two assists. In his first game at home for UM-Dearborn, Billy Brock (FR/Woodhaven, MI) recorded three assists.

UM-Dearborn head coach Chris Haltinner now sits one win away from 100 in his career.

UM-Dearborn continues its weekend series against Davenport University at 6 pm Saturday at the Patterson Ice Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
