Tomlinson Plays Hero in 2OT Thriller

ELGIN, Ill.Elwood Tomlinson led the University of Michigan-Dearborn (1-4) men's basketball team with 20 points on Saturday (Nov. 5). None more critical than his left-wing triple at the buzzer to give the Wolverines a 90-89 victory over Judson (0-3). 

 

UM-Dearborn Leaders

Tomlinson shot 7-19 from the field and 5-7 from behind the arc to give him 20 points. Jimmy Breaux and Bass Ollie each added 17 points, with Ollie recording a double-double with 14 boards. Breaux recorded six of his seven rebounds on the offensive glass. Maurice Anderson finished just shy of a double-double scoring 10 points and hauling in nine rebounds. 

 

Judson Leaders

Thomas Donati was a force for the Eagles, recording a game-high 23 points and 23 rebounds. Anterrious Rhyan and Jack Keller scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Eagles outrebounded the Wolverines 61-49 in the loss. 

 

Inside the Game

Dearborn found themselves in an early 6-0 deficit before Ollie made a pair of free throws with 16:13 on the clock. Andrew Leamy made a pair of jumpers to make it 9-6 eagles with 14:59 remaining. Breaux gave the Wolverines their first lead after getting the bucket and a foul to make it 11-9 Dearborn. With 7:17 on the clock, Judson would cap off a 6-0 run to give them a 22-16 lead. Ibrahim Mohamed and Breaux would get the deficit back down to two with 6:27 remaining in the half. The Eagles would keep the lead heading into the break leading Dearborn 34-31. 

 

Ollie would drill a jumper to open the second half before Tomlison would connect on his first of five triples to make it 37-36 Eagles. Tomlinson would connect on his second three with 16:25 to play to give Dearborn the 40-38 lead. Holding a 55-53 lead with 8:50 to play, Dearborn would go on a 7-0 run over the next 2:30 to give the Wolverines their largest lead of the game. With 54 seconds left, Judson would finally tie up the game at 69 a piece. However, neither team would score in the remaining 54 seconds, and the game would head to overtime. 

 

Judson seemed to be in control of the contest as they held a 76-72 lead with 48 seconds remaining. However, the Wolverines showed no quit scoring six of the final eight points to tie the game up at 78 and head to a second overtime. 

 

The second overtime saw both teams trading baskets before Judson was went to the free-throw line up 88-87. The Eagles connected on the first of two free throws but missed the back end giving Dearborn a chance. Ryan Len collected the pass after a Bass Ollie rebound and got the ball over half-court. Anderson set a down screen to free up Tomlinson on the left wing, and Len put the ball right in Tomlinson's shooting pocket. The junior rose up and struck a pose as he watched the ball trickle through the nylon as time expired, giving Dearborn the 90-89 victory.
