FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team battled Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference powerhouse Indiana Tech to a split in a doubleheader Monday in Fort Wayne, Ind.
After dropping the opener 2-1, UM-Dearborn scored a 6-5 win in 10 innings over the No. 21 Warriors to stay in the race for a WHAC postseason bid.
The split moves UM-Dearborn to 16-22-1 overall and 9-9 in the WHAC. The game-two win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Wolverines.
After the Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, UM-Dearborn cut the lead in half with an RBI double from Daniel Kerr in the eighth. The Wolverines left the bases loaded in the eighth and Indiana Tech held on for the win.
Patrick Downing, Andrew Capone, and Shaun Hannibal each recorded two hits, while Malcolm Harris took the loss on the mound, tossing five innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
An error and a wild pitch in the third inning of game two gave the Wolverines a 2-1 lead, but the Warriors answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to regain the advantage.
Tanner Hodges and Justin Dolney recorded RBIs in the fifth to put UM-Dearborn back in front 5-3, but the second two-run home run from Glen McClain tied the score in the bottom of the ninth. The Wolverines regrouped and Dolney came through with the game-winning RBI single in the 10th.
John Dyda got the start for the Wolverines and tossed eight innings, allowing five runs, four earned on six hits while striking out seven. Tanner Hodges got the win in relief with two scoreless innings, not allowing a hit and striking out three.
Capone, Kerr, and Dolney each finished with two hits in the win.
The Wolverines conclude the regular season with two doubleheaders this weekend, starting with two against Lawrence Tech at 1 pm Saturday at Jimmy Johns Field in Utica, Mich.
