Wolverines drop pair of one-run games to Lourdes

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team dropped two one-run games to Lourdes University in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at Mercy Field in Toledo, Ohio.

The Wolverines held a lead late in both, but the Gray Wolves rallied in both to drop falling to 15-16-1 overall and 8-4 in the WHAC. The Gray Wolves took game one 6-5 in 10 innings and game two 9-8.

In game one, a two-run double from Daniel Kerr gave UM-Dearborn a 4-2 lead, scoring all four runs in the fifth. The Gray Wolves answered back in the sixth with a pair of doubles to tie the game, eventually taking a lead on a single in the seventh.

Patrick Downing scored to tie the game in the seventh off a walk. Lourdes got a spectacular diving catch in right field to rob Kerr of extra bases in the ninth and found the winning run in the 10th.

John Dyda started on the mound for the Wolverines, pitching 6.1 innings. The sophomore recorded eight strikeouts and walked four while surrendering five runs on six hits.

In game two, the Wolverines led 6-3 heading into the seventh inning after Waymond Lemon Jr. hit a solo home run. Lourdes hit a pair of two-run home runs in the seventh and led by three heading to the bottom of the ninth.

After the Wolverines loaded the bases in the final inning, a two-run single from Antonio Carta to pulled UM-Dearborn within one before Lourdes closed the door. Lemon Jr., Shaun Hannibal and Downing recorded two hits each.

Garrett Davis got the start, pitching 5.1 innings and surrendering three runs on five hits. Davis recorded two strikeouts and walked six.

The Wolverines step out of the conference for a doubleheader against Spring Arbor University at 2 pm on Thursday in Spring Arbor, Mich.
