UM-Dearborn earns sweep of Madonna (RV) in WHAC series

LIVONIA, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team swept Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference-leading Madonna University in a makeup series Tuesday at Ilitch Ballpark in Livonia, Mich.

The Wolverines scored four runs in the eighth, including a three-run home run from Justin Dolney to take the opener 11-9. Garrett Davis pitched eight strong innings for the Wolverines in game two and UM-Dearborn held off a late Madonna rally to close out the sweep in game two 8-4.

The wins push UM-Dearborn 13-14-1 overall and 6-2 in the WHAC.

After Madonna went in front with a run in the top of the first of game one, the Wolverines tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took the lead 3-1 on a two-run triple from Andrew Capone in the second.

The Crusaders tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth before a Capone RBI and a Madonna error put UM-Dearborn back in front by two in the bottom half. Ryan Beadle recorded an RBI single in the fifth and Antonio Carta added one in the seventh to put the Wolverines up 7-5.

Madonna tied the game at 7-7 in the eighth before Dolney came through with a three-run home run in the eighth.

John Dyda got the start for the Wolverines and pitched 6.1 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits, while walking five and striking out six. Matt Buhagiar (1-2) picked up the win in relief, pitching the final 1.1 innings.

The Wolverines recorded 14 hits in the win, led by Capone with three hits, including a triple, three RBIs and a run scored. Daniel Kerr, Patrick Downing, Beadle, and Waymond Lemon Jr. each added two hits.

UM-Dearborn jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game two with six in the third. After a Madonna error opened the scoring. Kerr added a two-run single, followed by RBIs from Carta, Jacob Leija, and Capone. The Wolverines added two more in the sixth including a squeeze play to score downing on a bunt from Leija.

Davis (3-2) tossed eight innings, allowing four runs, one earned on seven hits, walking one and striking out five. Downing, Carta, and Leija each recorded two hits, while Capone earned four walks.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play against Aquinas College at 1 pm Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
