Baseball splits WHAC series at Cleary

HOWELL, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team returned to the field after the weekend was washed out, traveling to Cleary University for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader Monday in Howell, Mich.  

The Wolverines took game one 15-9 on the strength of 19 hits. The Cougars scored six runs in the fourth inning of game two and held on late for a 9-7 win over UM-Dearborn. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 11-14-1 overall and 4-2 in the WHAC.

After the Cougars took a 4-3 lead after the first inning of game one, UM-Dearborn starter Dan Bos settled down and allowed the Wolverine bats to get going. UM-Dearborn scored 12 unanswered runs starting with four in the third, including an RBI triple from Patrick Downing.

The Wolverines scored three more in the fourth with RBI doubles from Downing and Ryan Beadle. Daniel Kerr and Antonio Carta each added a two-run double in the sixth to put UM-Dearborn up 15-4.

Cleary battled back with five unanswered the rest of the way, but the Wolverines held on. Bos went five innings to earn the win and move to 1-0 on the season. He allowed four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four.

Andrew Capone, Shaun Hannibal, Kerr, and Downing each finished with three hits. Kerr and Downing added three RBIs each.

The Wolverines led 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth of game two before the Cougars took control with six runs in the frame. UM-Dearborn chipped away, but Cleary held on for the win.

Beadle led the Wolverine offense with four hits, three runs, and two RBIs, while Andrew Capone and Justin Dolney each added a double and two hits.

Jack Hook (1-1) got the start and took the loss with 3.2 innings pitched, allowing seven runs on six hits, walking one and striking out two.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play against Madonna University at 1 pm Tuesday in Livonia, Mich. UM-Dearborn will serve as the home team for the doubleheader.
