Carney Comes Up Clutch, Wolverines Overcome Five Goal Deficit to Secure First Win

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn (1-2) lacrosse team was staring down their third loss of the season after facing a 5-0 deficit early in the second quarter. Instead, the Wolverines would score eight out of the last 10 goals to take an 8-7 victory over Montreat (0-3) for their first victory of the year. 

 

Braxton Kern broke the scoreless drought for the Wolverines as he linked up with Vincent Adams and buried the Wolverines' first goal with 5:53 left in the second quarter. At the 4:31 mark, James Blaize scored the Wolverines' second goal as he ripped an unassisted goal to make it 5-2. Montreat would re-take a four-goal lead after scoring with 2:40 left in the half. 

 

The Wolverines came out of the locker room on a mission scoring five unanswered goals in the third quarter to take a 7-6 lead. Adams scored two goals, while Ryan Savage, Mason Loudermilk, and Blaize all added goals. Montreat would tie up the game with 2:32 left in the third quarter, and both teams entered the fourth quarter with everything to play for. 

 

Jack Myers (1-1) played the final 30 minutes for the Wolverines and made three crucial saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the game for the Wolverines. With 13:21 left in the quarter, Liam Carney took a Loudermilk pass and buried the shot giving the Wolverines the advantage. The Wolverine defense stifled Montreat's attack in the final 13 minutes as neither team would find the back on the net, leading to the 8-7 Wolverine win.
