No. 2 Wolverines rally for 5-3 win over Saints

DEARBORN, Mich. – The No. 2 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team won its 10th straight, topping Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe Aquinas College on Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The Wolverines came from behind to win 5-3, improving to 11-1 on the season and are now 3-1 in the WHAC.

After surrendering two goals in 26 seconds in the first period, UM-Dearborn fought back a minute later as Andrew Spiegel scored from behind the net, deflecting it off an Aquinas defender to make it a one-goal game.

In the second period, the Wolverines got the tying goal from Tyler Groat who scored off a tic-tac-toe play set up by line-mates Billy Brock and Zach Nichols. The goal was the 98th of his career.

The Saints answered back just over a minute later to take a 3-2 lead into the third period.

UM-Dearborn tied it for a second time as Silas Johnson scored his first goal of the season off assists from Kevin Bechard and Kyle Schnettler. As the Wolverines continued to press, as Mathieu LaForest added the go-ahead tally with under nine minutes remaining in regulation. The Wolverines scored an empty-netter from Justin Dunn to put the game away in the final minute.

Spiegel and Johnson led the way as each scored once and added an assist, while Nichols finished with two assists.

Thomas Proudlock was credited with the victory after making one save in the third period. Proudlock replaced starter Jordan Gilbert, who made 16 saves through 40 minutes.

The Wolverines return to action against No. 3 Adrian College at 7 pm on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
