Madonna escapes with 2OT win over Wolverines

RIVERVIEW, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team played a second consecutive double-overtime Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference game, this time against No. 20 Madonna University Saturday at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview, Mich.

The Wolverines battled the WHAC powerhouse Crusaders from the opening whistle, but Madonna was able to capitalize on an opportunity early in the second overtime period to escape with a 2-1 win.

The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 4-6-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the WHAC.

UM-Dearborn put Madonna on its heels early with a penalty kick goal from Jacob Drzyzga in the 11th minute. The goal was the fifth of the year for Drzyzga and his third consecutive game with a penalty kick score.

Madonna was able to tie the score in the 38th minute on a goal from Leonardo Gois Abonizio, while each team had several chances in the second half to move in front but the defense stood tall on both ends of the field.

UM-Dearborn nearly secured the win with seconds ticking down in the first overtime as Brendan Petz was able to get free for a shot from the right side, but Madonna goalkeeper Joe Smith made a diving save the keep the game even.

Yuri Farkas netted the game-winner for the Crusaders in the second overtime on a diving header in the 103rd minute. Madonna outshot UM-Dearborn 24-15, while Brian Ostapenko made eight saves for the Wolverines.

UM-Dearborn travels to Cornerstone University for a WHAC contest at 7 pm Wednesday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
