GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team dropped its season-opening contest to Georgetown College Friday in Georgetown, Ky.
After the teams exchanged goals in the opening 10 minutes, the Tigers scored four unanswered to take a 5-1 lead. UM-Dearborn stormed back with three straight, cutting the deficit to one with five minutes to play. Georgetown quickly added an insurance goal and escaped with the 6-4 win.
The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 0-1 on the season, the first under Head Coach Worteh Sampson.
After Noel Roman put Georgetown up 1-0 in the third minute, UM-Dearborn senior Jacob Drzyzga tied the score in the 10th with his first of the year. Down 5-1 late in the first half, the Wolverines got the first career goal from freshman Austin Dukes to close the gap before the break.
Freshman Brendan Petz gathered a loose ball from the top of the 18-yard box in the opening minutes of the second half and sent a shot into the upper corner for the Wolverines, his first career goal, to make it a 5-3 game.
UM-Dearborn continued to battle and cut into the Tiger lead a bit more with the first goal of the season for senior Grant Baker in the 85th minute, but Georgetown answered right back to secure the win.
Freshman Brian Ostapenko took the loss in net for the Wolverines, making four saves. The teams were even with 14 shots each, while UM-Dearborn held a narrow advantage in corner kicks, 5-4.
UM-Dearborn opens the home portion of the 2019 schedule against Olivet College at 7:30 pm Wednesday at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview, Mich.
