Fresh faces shine in Wolverine win

RIVERVIEW, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season in the 2019 home opener against Olivet College Wednesday at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview, Mich.

After the Comets tied the game at 1-1, sophomore Obaidah Shaherli found the back of the net on a loose ball in the box with 25 minutes to play to give the Wolverines a 2-1 victory. The win moves UM-Dearborn to 1-1 overall this season and is the first for head coach Worteh Sampson.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Wolverines record several quality scoring chances, UM-Dearborn was able to break through early in the second half on the first career goal from freshman Christian Cuevas on an assist from senior Jacob Drzyzga.

The Comets answered 10 minutes later, setting the stage for Shaherli's game-winner. The go-ahead goal came off a long throw from Kevin Gondoly that found Jack Barnett at the far post. Barnett rattled a shot off the post and the rebound fell to Shaherli, who deposited the ball in the far corner for the Wolverines.

The UM-Dearborn rally came with 10 men on the field after a red card earlier in the first half. The Wolverines led in shots 26-5 and 8-2 in corner kicks.

Junior Stephen Mezuk earned the win in net after taking over at the start of the second half for the Wolverines.

UM-Dearborn returns to action against Huntington University at 3 pm Saturday, Sept. 7 at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview.
