Wolverine men rally for 2-1 win in WHAC opener

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team opened the 2019 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season with a comeback win over Lourdes University on the road Saturday in Sylvania, Ohio.

The Wolverines fell behind early in the second half but scored twice in less than nine minutes to earn a 2-1 victory over the Gray Wolves to move to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the WHAC.

After Andris Klempert opened the scoring for Lourdes in the 57th minute, freshman Brendan Petz scored his second goal of the season for UM-Dearborn on assists from Jack Barnett and Obaidah Shaherli less than three minutes later.

Shaherli found the game-winner in the 68th minute as he took a pass from Petz and flicked the ball over the Lourdes goalkeeper for his second goal of the season.

Freshman Brian Ostapenko made four saves for the Wolverines in net to earn his first collegiate victory. UM-Dearborn outshot Lourdes 12-10.

The Wolverines head to Lawrence Tech for a WHAC contest at 7 pm Wednesday in Southfield, Mich.
