Alma tops UM-Dearborn 13-6 in season opener

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season with a matchup against Alma College, an NCAA DIII program, Saturday at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse in Beverly Hills, Mich.

The Wolverines were stifled on offense in the second half as Alma pulled away for a 13-6 win to start the UM-Dearborn season 0-1.

After Alma started the scoring in the opening minute, UM-Dearborn found its scoring with two goals in 38 seconds, starting with the first career tally from Mason Loudermilk. Senior Micah Rinke found the net shortly after to make it 2-1. The Scots led 3-2 after the first before senior Ben Phillips scored his first of the season on a feed from Adam Ranck.

Connor Logan scored the first of his career on a feed from Nolan Kelley later in the second quarter as the teams traded goals and Alma led 5-4 at the break. Ranck tied the game at five early in the third on a feed from Kelley, but the Scots scored three straight to take control. Rinke scored his second of the game late in the third before Alma pulled away in the fourth with five unanswered.

The Wolverines outshot the Scots 45-42 and led in ground ball 31-27. UM-Dearborn struggled on the clear, converting 15 of 29 opportunities.

Jon Chaffee made 12 saves in net for the Wolverines.

UM-Dearborn hosts Kalamazoo College at 11 am Saturday at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse.
