Wolverines sweep WHAC opening doubleheader

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team opened the 2019 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season and home schedule with a convincing doubleheader sweep of Lourdes University Tuesday at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.

After Lourdes took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning of game one, UM-Dearborn scored eight unanswered to win 8-1. The Wolverines took control early in game two for a 9-2 win a series sweep. The wins push UM-Dearborn to 12-6 overall and 2-0 in the WHAC.

Ashlynn Henderson held the Gray Wolves to just four hits, tossing a complete game. The junior improves to 4-1 this season for the Wolverines, allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out six in seven innings.

The Wolverine scoring started in the third, as UM-Dearborn tied the game on a wild pitch before a two-run single from Aspen Starr put the home team in front. Amy Jarrett and Megan added RBIs in the fourth to make it 5-1 Wolverines.

Sarah Prashad, Lohner and Starr each finished with two hits, while Prashad added two runs scored and two stolen bases. UM-Dearborn stole five bases in the win.

In game two, Rachel Clem gave UM-Dearborn an early lead with an RBI double in the second, while three unearned runs in the third made it 4-0 in favor the Wolverines. Two RBIs from Madelin Skene and an RBI from Lohner, Amber Cheplick and Leah Oldham put the game away late.

Lohner added two more hits a run scored and a stolen base, while Clem and Cheplick each finished with two hits. Erin McCune got the start on the mound, going three innings, allowing one run on three hits, while Samantha Torongeau (1-2) picked up her first win of the season, pitching 2.1 innings in relief.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play with a doubleheader against Siena Heights University at 1 pm Saturday in Adrian, Mich.
