Softball tops Mansfield, falls to Union on day three

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team split two games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Monday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Wolverines rallied for a 7-5 win over Mansfield University, an NCAA Division II program, followed by a 10-2 loss to Union College (Ky.) in six innings. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 7-5 overall this season.

Against Mansfield, the Wolverines fell behind 4-0 before tying the score with four in the fourth. The inning included two-run singles from Madisyn Collins and Amy Jarrett. After the Mountaineers scored one to retake the lead in the bottom of the inning, UM-Dearborn moved in front for good with three in the fifth.

Kayla Laquiere doubled to center for score two to start the scoring in the fifth, followed by an RBI single from Rachel Clem.

Erin McCune (2-1) got the win on the mound, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits, walking three and striking out one. Ashlynn Henderson picked up her second save of the season, going three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.

Laquiere and Collins each recorded two hits, while the Wolverines finished with seven runs, eight hits and one error.

In the second game of the day, UM-Dearborn was held to five hits as Union took control early with seven runs through three innings. Sarah Prashad led the Wolverines with two hits, one run and an RBI.

Samantha Torongeau (0-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned on six hits, while walking two.

UM-Dearborn plays three on Tuesday, starting against Penn State University-Schuylkill at 9:30 am in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
