UM-Dearborn opens trip with two wins in South Carolina

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team opened its trip south for Spring Break with two wins at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic Saturday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Wolverines scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 13-5 win over Ferrum College in five innings to open the day, followed by a convincing 7-2 win over Penn State University-Schuylkill. The wins push UM-Dearborn to 6-2 overall this season.

In the opener, Ferrrum scored five in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead into the fourth. The Wolverines answered with two runs in the top of the inning, including an RBI double from freshman Madelin Skene to cut the deficit to two.

UM-Dearborn sent 15 batters to the plate in the fifth. After junior Amy Jarrett walked to drive in a run, freshman Aspen Starr doubled to score two and put the Wolverines up 6-5. UM-Dearborn led 9-4 after a two-run single from junior Kayla Laquiere and an error to added another run.

Senior Leah Oldham highlighted the fifth inning with the first home run of her career to score three more.

Junior Ashlynn Henderson (2-0) pitched the final three innings for the Wolverines to pick up the win, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out three. Oldham led the offense with three hits, including her three-run home run, while senior Sarah Prashad added two doubles.

Against the PSU-Schuylkill, the Wolverines were paced by the first-career win and complete game for Erin McCune (1-1). The freshman pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs, none earned, on four hits, while striking out four.

Oldham got the scoring started for the Wolverines in the first on a double that nearly cleared the fence, while Skene scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Skene doubled in the third to drive in one, while senior Rachel Clem added an RBI and run scored later in the inning to put UM-Dearborn up 5-0.

Sophomore Kaylie McConnell added an RBI double in the fourth, while junior Liz Grumeretz added a sacrifice fly RBI in the sixth to score freshman Baylee Collins. Junior Megan Lohner and Skene each finished with two hits and two runs in the win.

The Wolverines return to action against Chestnut Hill College at 11:30 am Sunday, followed by a matchup versus Mansfield University at 1:30 pm in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
