Wolverines Power Past Asbury, Taylor in DH

UPLAND, Ind. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team traveled to Taylor University for a pair of games, topping Asbury University in the opener and the host Trojans in the finale Saturday in Upland, Ind.

The Wolverines used the long ball to prevail in both contests, topping Asbury 6-2 with four runs in the seventh, while UM-Dearborn hit three 3-run home runs against Taylor, which is receiving votes in the latest NAIA national poll, to take a 10-2 victory in five innings.

The sweep pushes UM-Dearborn to 7-5 overall on the season and the Wolverine win streak now stands at five games.

Against Asbury, the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single from Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI), who added her first home run of the season in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.

The Wolverines broke the game open in the seventh. Kauten singled home Sarah Prashad (JR/Mississauga, Ontario) for her third RBI of the game, followed by a two-run single from Amy Jarrett (SO/Howell, MI). Rachel Clem (JR/Stevensville, MI) added an insurance run with an RBI single later in the inning.

The win on the mound went to Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI), who pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit, while striking out seven.

Against Taylor, Clem got the scoring started with a three-run home run in the second, scoring Riley Miller (SR/Birmingham, MI) and Olivia Cottom (SO/Holt, MI). Verduzco picked up an RBI single in the third before Jordan Ewald (SR/Wixom, MI) hit her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to center field in the fourth.

The Wolverines put the game away with the second 3-run home run of the game for Clem in the fifth. With six RBIs in the contest, Clem tied the school record for most runs batted in for a single game, previously held by three Wolverines, including Ewald.

Verduzco got her second win of the day, pitching the first two innings, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out two.

The Wolverines return to the road for two games at the University of the Cumberlands at 4 pm Friday in Williamsburg, Ky.
