Wolverines cruise to week ending win over Schuylkill

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team concluded its stay at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a dominating win over Penn State University Schuylkill Saturday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

After starting pitcher Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) struck out the side in the first inning, the Wolverine offense went to work, scoring six in the first, seven in the second and five in the third to roll to a 19-2 win in five innings. UM-Dearborn returns home with a record of 5-5 overall.

Six Wolverines finished with multiple hits, led by Meaghan Markus (FR/Mattawan, MI) with three hits, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Verduzco, Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI), Kayla Laquiere (SO/Shelby Twp., MI), Amy Jarrett (SO/Howell, MI) and Riley Hison (JR/Macomb Township, MI) all added two hits, as UM-Dearborn combined for 20 as a team, one shy of the program record.

Verduzco (3-1) went the first two innings, striking out four of the seven batters she faced, allowing one unearned run. Samantha Torongeau (SO/Shelby Township, MI) pitched the final three innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit, while striking out five.

The Wolverines have nearly a week off before heading to Indiana to take on Taylor University and Asbury University in a pair of doubleheaders over two days in Upland, Ind. The weekend starts against Taylor (RV) at 3 pm Friday.
