Verduzco shines in UM-Dearborn sweep

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team picked up its first two wins of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season in a sweep of league newcomer Rochester College Sunday at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Wolverines got a dominant performance from senior Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) on the mound and at the plate in a 3-2 win in the opener, while the UM-Dearborn offense came alive with 15 hits in a 14-3, five-inning victory in the finale. The sweep moves the Wolverines to 10-8 overall and 2-2 in the WHAC.

Verduzco was dialed in for the Wolverines in game one, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning with UM-Dearborn on top 2-0. With two outs in the seventh, the Warriors found their first hit and rallied for a pair of unearned runs to tie the game at 2-2.

Verduzco came through at the plate in the bottom half of the inning, ripping an RBI single to drive home Rachel Dolland (JR/Lake Orion, MI) and give the Wolverines the win. UM-Dearborn got on the board in the first inning on a two-run home run from Verduzco, her first of the season.

Verduzco (6-2) went seven innings on the mound, allowing two runs, both unearned, while striking out 12, one shy of the UM-Dearborn single-game record. Verduzco and Jordan Ewald (SR/Wixom, MI) each finished with two hits.

In game two, the Wolverines jumped out to an early lead with four straight, two-out, RBI hits in the first inning, including knocks from Meaghan Markus (FR/Mattawan, MI), Rachel Dolland, Olivia Cottom (SO/Holt, MI) and Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI). Rachel Clem (JR/Stevensville, MI) put UM-Dearborn up 5-0 with a solo home run in the second, while Kauten and Sarah Prashad (JR/Mississauga, Ontario) each added a two-run single in the third.

After Rochester scored three in the top-half of the fourth, the Wolverines put the game away with five more, including RBIs from Leah Oldham (JR/Sterling Heights, MI), Megan Lohner (FR/Kalamazoo, MI) and Samantha Torongeau (SO/Shelby Township, MI).

Ashlynn Henderson (SO/Temecula, CA) got her first win of the season on the mound. She went all five innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits, while walking two and striking out two.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play with a doubleheader against Siena Heights University at 3:30 pm Wednesday at Buysse Field on the campus of the University of Detroit-Mercy.
