Brilliant week for Verduzco garners WHAC honor

DEARBORN, Mich. - For the third time this season and the fifth time in her career, University of Michigan-Dearborn softball senior Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) earned a weekly conference honor.

After a spectacular performance on Sunday in a sweep of Indiana Tech on the road to conclude a standout week on the mound, Verduzco was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league Monday.

Verduzco (11-3) appeared in six games for the Wolverines last week, picking up four wins and earning her first save of the season. In total, she tossed 38 innings, three complete games, while recording a 1.47 ERA. She struck out 44 batters while allowing just eight earned runs on 19 hits and seven walks.

Verduzco turned in a historic performance in game one against Indiana Tech, striking out a UM-Dearborn program-record record 17 batters, breaking the previous mark of 13 held by Kim Lackowski. She carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, where it was broken up with one out.

In game two, Verduzco returned to the mound and tossed 11.1 innings, striking out another 12 batters, allowing two runs on four hits.

The Wolverines return to action against Aquinas College (RV) at 3:30 pm Friday at Buysse Field on the campus of the University of Detroit-Mercy in Detroit.
