Verduzco claims WHAC Pitcher of the Week honor

DEARBORN, Mich. - For the second time this season, University of Michigan-Dearborn softball senior Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) earned a weekly conference honor for her performance in a sweep over Rochester College on Sunday.

Verduzco carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before it was broken up with two outs in a 3-2 win over the Warriors in game one. She struck out 12 batters, one shy of the UM-Dearborn single-game record.

For her efforts, Verduzco was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the conference on Monday. The award is the second this season for Verduzco.

In 11 appearances, Verduzco holds a record of 6-2 with a 0.74 ERA and four complete games. She has struck out 49 batters while allowing just five earned runs in 47.1 innings of work. Verduzco ranks fifth in the NAIA in total earned runs allowed and ERA.

In the game-one win, Verduzco also led the Wolverines at the plate, including a two-run home run in the first inning and the game-winning RBI single in the seventh.

The Wolverines are 10-8 overall and 2-2 in the WHAC this season. UM-Dearborn hosts WHAC foe Siena Heights University for a doubleheader at 3:30 pm Wednesday at Buysse Field on the campus of the University of Detroit-Mercy.
