Verduzco leads UM-Dearborn to sweep of UNOH

LIMA, Ohio - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team swept a crucial Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader against the University of Northwestern Ohio Wednesday in Lima, Ohio.

UNOH, which came into the series at the top of the WHAC standings, had zero success solving UM-Dearborn senior pitcher Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI), who tossed a one-hitter, winning game one 2-0.

The Wolverines trailed 3-0 in game two, but rallied for four late runs to earn the 4-3 victory, completing the sweep. The wins push UM-Dearborn to 13-11 overall and 5-5 in the WHAC.

In game one, Verduzco was dominant, allowing only a double in the fifth inning, while walking one and striking out 10, facing just one batter over the minimum. She improves to 8-3 overall this season.

Verduzco also got the scoring started, hitting a solo home run in the third, her second of the season, while finishing 3-for-3 at the plate. Rachel Clem (JR/Stevensville, MI) hit her team-best fourth home run of the season in the fourth, giving the Wolverines an insurance run. Kaylie McConnell (FR/Holland, MI), Amy Jarrett (SO/Howell, MI) and Clem each finished with two hits.

Verduzco started game two, but UNOH was able to scratch across three runs, with one in the first and two in the third. Samantha Torongeau (SO/Shelby Township, MI) came in to relieve Verduzco and got the Wolverines out of trouble in the third.

Jarrett got the Wolverines on the board with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. UM-Dearborn took the lead in the sixth with three runs, started by an RBI double from Olivia Cottom (SO/Holt, MI). Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI) tied the game with an RBI single and Clem put the Wolverines in front with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Verduzco returned to the mound in the bottom of the sixth and shut down the Racers the rest of the way for her first save of the season. Torongeau picked up the win, pitching 2.2 innings, not allowing a run on two hits.

The Wolverines host Lawrence Tech for a doubleheader at 1 pm Saturday at Buysse Field on the campus of the University of Detroit-Mercy.
