Madonna takes two from UM-Dearborn softball

LIVONIA, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team continued league play in a doubleheader against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference rival Madonna University Friday in Livonia, Mich.

The Wolverines fell 2-0 in the opener and were edged 3-2 in the finale. The losses drop UM-Dearborn to 11-11 overall and 3-5 in the WHAC.

Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) tossed another complete game for the Wolverines in game one, allowing two runs, both unearned, on three hits, while walking one and striking out three. The Crusaders scored the lone runs of the game in the fourth after a Wolverine error.

Madonna starting pitcher Madisen Henry carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, where UM-Dearborn broke it up with a double off the bat of Rachel Dolland (JR/Lake Orion, MI) with one out. Two straight line drives by the Wolverines were caught to end the game.

Madonna jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two, but the Wolverines answered with a two-run home run from Rachel Clem (JR/Stevensville, MI), her fourth of the season, in the fifth. UM-Dearborn was unable to get closer, finishing with two runs on six hits and one error.

Samantha Torongeau (SO/Shelby Township, MI) was charged with the loss on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out two.

The Wolverines return to action against (RV) Aquinas College in a WHAC doubleheader at 3:30 pm Tuesday at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.
