No. 5 Brenau takes two from UM-Dearborn

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team dropped two games on the opening day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic Monday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

No. 5 Brenau University topped the Wolverines 9-1 in the opener after scoring five unearned runs in the second inning to take control. The Tigers limited UM-Dearborn to two hits in the second game to take a 6-0 win. The sweep drops the Wolverines to 1-3 early in the season.

Senior pitcher Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) looked strong in game one, going four innings allowing five runs, none earned on five hits, while striking out three.

Verduzco and Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI) each finished with two hits at the plate.

Julie St. John (JR/Farmington, MI) got the start in game two for UM-Dearborn, going 4.1 innings, allowing four runs, two earned on four hits. Olivia Cottom (SO/Holt, MI) recorded the team's lone extra-base hit on the day with a double.

The Wolverines continue play on their Spring Break trip with two games on Tuesday, starting with a matchup against Grove City College at 10 am.
