Wolverines Split Tuesday at Fastpitch Dreams Classic

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team split two games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic Tuesday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Wolverines used a nine-run fourth inning to pull away from Grove City College for an 11-2 victory in six innings in the opener.

UM-Dearborn trailed 1-0 into the seventh inning of the finale against Ferrum College. The Wolverines got a double from Samantha Torongeau (SO/Shelby Township, MI) with one out in the bottom of the seventh and freshman Kaylie McConnell (FR/Holland, MI) drove in the tying run to send the game to extra innings. Ferrum scored three in the top of the eighth, including a home run and held on for a 4-1 win.

The split moves UM-Dearborn to 2-4 on the season.

Down 2-0 against Grove City, the Wolverine offense got going in the fourth starting with an RBI single from Sarah Prashad (JR/Mississauga, Ontario). Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI) put the Wolverines in front with a two-run single later in the inning. Rachel Dolland (JR/Lake Orion, MI) and Megan Lohner (FR/Kalamazoo, MI) each added RBIs, while four more runs scored on Ferrum errors.

Torongeau got her first win of the season, pitching a complete game, going six innings, allowing two runs, none earned on three hits, while striking out five. Prashad, Kauten and Riley Miller (SR/Birmingham, MI) each finished with two hits in the win.

Against Ferrum, the Wolverines were held off the scoreboard for the first six innings, as Panther pitcher Courtney Rudd put together a strong performance, striking out 11 UM-Dearborn batters. McConnell's RBI single in the seventh drove home Riley Hison (JR/Macomb Township, MI), who pinch ran after Torongeau's double with one out in the seventh. Meaghan Markus (FR/Mattawan, MI) and McConnell each finished with two hits.

Julie St. John (JR/Farmington, MI) was strong on the mound for the Wolverines, going 6.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits. The loss went to Ashlynn Henderson (SO/Temecula, CA) in relief.

The Wolverines take on Ferrum in a rematch at 10 am Wednesday in North Myrtle Beach.
