McConnell complete game leads UM-Dearborn to split

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team rebounded from a game one loss to the University of the Cumberlands to earn a split in a nonconference doubleheader Friday in Williamsburg, Kent.

The Wolverines fell 10-1 in five innings in game one before topping the Patriots 5-2 in the finale. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 8-6 overall this season.

After UM-Dearborn captured the lead 1-0 in the first inning of game one, UC took control with six runs in the bottom of the inning, including a grand slam home run.

Rachel Dolland (JR/Lake Orion, MI) picked up the loan RBI for the Wolverines with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Riley Hison (JR/Macomb Township, MI) finished with two of the five Wolverine hits, both doubles.

In the finale, Olivia Cottom (SO/Holt, MI) put UM-Dearborn up 1-0 in the second inning, while Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) drove in a second run with a sacrifice fly in the third. The Wolverines went up 4-1 in the fifth, scoring two runs on a Patriot error, while Dolland added an RBI double in the sixth.

Freshman Kaylie McConnell (FR/Holland, MI) picked up the win for the Wolverines on the mound, earning her first career complete game and moving to 2-0 on the season. She went seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out two and walking seven.

The Wolverines open the 2018 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season, looking to defend their regular season title, in a doubleheader against Lourdes University at 4:30 pm March 28 in Sylvania, Ohio.
