Aquinas takes two from UM-Dearborn

DETROIT - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team was swept by Aquinas College in the first of three Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheaders this weekend to close the 2018 regular season, Friday at Buysse Field in Detroit.

Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) had a no-hitter through five innings for the Wolverines in game one, but the Saints (RV) scored five in the sixth and six in the seventh to take the opener 11-2. Aquinas hit three solo home runs in the second game and topped UM-Dearborn 5-3. The losses drop UM-Dearborn to 16-14 overall and 8-8 in the WHAC.

The opening game was delayed one hour due to lightning in the area around the field.

Verduzco pitched the complete game in the opener, striking out four. Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI) led the Wolverine offense with three hits, including a double, while Sarah Prashad (JR/Mississauga, Ontario), Meaghan Markus (FR/Mattawan, MI) and Jordan Ewald (SR/Wixom, MI) each finished with two hits.

Trailing 2-0 in the second game, UM-Dearborn scored three in the second, including an RBI single from Verduzco. Aquinas got a solo home run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take control.

Ashlynn Henderson (SO/Temecula, CA) got the start for the Wolverines, going 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out one.

The Wolverines travel to Cornerstone University for a doubleheader at 1 pm Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
