Verduzco dominant in historic sweep of Indiana Tech

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) had an historic afternoon on the mound for the University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team in a sweep of Indiana Tech on the road Sunday in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Verduzco set two program records in a 1-0 win in game one. She returned to the mound in game two, pitching 11.1 innings and earning a second win of the day and her fourth of the week, as UM-Dearborn emerged with a 6-3 victory.

The sweep moves UM-Dearborn to 16-12 overall and 8-6 in the WHAC.

Verduzco dominated game one, taking a perfect game into the seventh inning, until it was broken up by a one-out single. She faced one batter over the minimum, striking out 17 of the 22 Warriors that stepped in the batter's box. The strikeout total set a new single-game record for UM-Dearborn, breaking the previous mark of 13, held by Kim Lackowski.

The shutout was the fifth of Verduzco's career, setting a new career shutout mark for a Wolverine pitcher, breaking a tie she held with Lackowski.

The lone run of the game came on an RBI single from Riley Hison (JR/Macomb Township, MI) in the third inning, driving in Rachel Clem (JR/Stevensville, MI). The Wolverines were held to two hits in the contest by Indiana Tech pitcher Amanda Shonka, who added 10 strikeouts of her own.

Verduzco and Shonka locked up in another pitching duel in the finale. Each team managed just one run until the 12th, with both pitchers going all the way to the final frame before exiting the game.

With the game tied in the 12th, UM-Dearborn erupted for five runs, including RBIs from Jordan Ewald (SR/Wixom, MI) and Clem, while Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI) broke it open with a three-run home run later in the inning, finally forcing Shonka out of the game.

Verduzco surrendered a run in the bottom of the inning and Ashlynn Henderson (SO/Temecula, CA) entered the game for the Wolverines, pitching the rest of the way to secure the win. Verduzco finished with 11.1 innings pitched, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out 12. She finished the day with 29 total strikeouts and 220 total pitches thrown, while moving to 11-3 on the season.

The wins pushed UM-Dearborn into fifth place in the WHAC standings with six games left in the regular season. The Wolverines host league leader Aquinas College (RV) at 3:30 pm Friday at Buysse Field in Detroit.
