Verduzco No-Hitter Highlights Dominant Wolverine Sweep

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) recorded the first no-hitter of her career in the first game of a sweep of SUNY Delhi at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic Friday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Verduzco faced just one batter over the minimum, allowing one walk and striking out 11 in a 13-0 Wolverine win in five innings. UM-Dearborn completed the sweep with an 11-2 win in five over the Broncos. The sweep pushes UM-Dearborn to 4-5 on the season.

The Wolverines scored in every inning of the opener, starting with an RBI triple from Verduzco in the first. Meaghan Markus (FR/Mattawan, MI) added an RBI single in the second, while Rachel Clem (JR/Stevensville, MI), Markus and Sarah Prashad (JR/Mississauga, Ontario) added RBIs in the third. Doubles from Riley Miller (SR/Birmingham, MI) and Clem scored three runs in the fourth, while Olivia Cottom (SO/Holt, MI) and Clem closed it out with one-run singles in the fifth.

Verduzco faced just 16 batters for the complete game, moving to 2-1 on the season.

The Wolverines finished with 13 runs on 16 hits, while committing zero errors. UM-Dearborn took advantage of six errors from the Broncos.

In game two, the Wolverines jumped out early with four runs in the first, including RBIs from Cottom, Clem and Miller. SUNY Delhi got on the board for the first time on the day with a pair of runs in the third. The Wolverines pulled away with seven runs in the fourth and shut the door the rest of the way on defense to close the game in five innings.

Kaylie McConnell (FR/Holland, MI) got the fourth inning started with an RBI single, while Samantha Torongeau (SO/Shelby Township, MI) and Cottom added RBI doubles. Miller and Kayla Laquiere (SO/Shelby Twp., MI) each recorded RBIs later in the inning.

McConnell got the win on the mound, the first of her college career. She pitched the first two innings, allowing no runs on one hit and struck out four. She added three hits at the plate, while Cottom, Miller and Laquiere each finished with two hits.

The Wolverines play their final game of the 2018 spring trip against Penn State-Schuykill at 9:30 am Saturday in North Myrtle Beach.
