Wolverines split with Cardinals on Senior Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team split the final doubleheader of the regular season against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe Concordia University on Senior Day at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Wolverines took the opener behind three RBIs from Riley Hison (JR/Macomb Township, MI) and a complete game on the mound from Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI). Concordia took game two, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the third en route to a 10-2 victory. The split ends the regular season for the Wolverines at 18-16 overall and 10-10 in the conference.

UM-Dearborn honored seniors Jordan Ewald (SR/Wixom, MI), Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI), Riley Miller (SR/Birmingham, MI) and Verduzco in a ceremony at the conclusion of game one.

In the opener, Hison put the Wolverines up 1-0 with an RBI double down the right field line in the first inning, scoring Sarah Prashad (JR/Mississauga, Ontario). After Concordia hit a solo home run in the second to tie the score, Hison put the Wolverines back on top with an RBI single in the third and added another in the fourth to make it 4-1 in favor of UM-Dearborn. Olivia Cottom (SO/Holt, MI) tripled to right field to drive in a pair in the fifth to help put the game away.

On the mound, Verduzco earned her 13th win of the year. She tossed all seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, striking out eight.

In the finale, Concordia scored five runs in the first and never trailed, earning the final spot in the WHAC Postseason Tournament with the win. Prashad continued to swing a hot bat, finishing with two hits and a run scored for UM-Dearborn.

The Wolverines enter the WHAC Postseason Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 Aquinas College at 6 pm Wednesday at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio.
