The Crusaders took the first set 25-13, but the Wolverines put the pressure on their ranked opponent in the second and third. Madonna prevailed in both sets to take the match 25-13, 25-21, 25-23. The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the WHAC.
The Wolverines finished the match with more kills, topping the Crusaders 41-40, but UM-Dearborn finished with 22 errors, compared to eight from Madonna.
Shayla Smalls (SR/Canton, MI) led the Wolverines in kills with 13, finishing with a .308 hitting percentage. Freshman Gina Giacomini (FR/Plymouth, MI) added nine kills, while Erin Parrinello (JR/Westland, MI) finished with eight. The setter combination of Daniella Barile (SO/Plymouth, MI) and Sabrina Giacomini (FR/Plymouth, MI) each recorded 15 assists, while Parrinello and Caitlyn Carlson (JR/Armada, MI) each recorded nine digs.
Madonna was led by Karlie Kelly with a team-high 11 kills. Crusader setter Lauren Korth finished with 31 assists.
UM-Dearborn has a week off before continuing the WHAC season against the University of Northwestern Ohio at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 in Lima, Ohio.
