WOLVERINES SPLIT ON DAY ONE OF EARLY BIRD

The Wolverines split two matches, falling in the opener to Goshen College in a hard-fought five-set contest while running away with a three-set win over Fisk University to start the season 1-1. Goshen took the first match 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 15-13 over UM-Dearborn, which topped Fisk 25-16, 25-21, 25-17.

Against Goshen, Shayla Smalls (SR/Canton, MI) led the Wolverines with 20 kills and freshman Gina Giacomini (FR/Plymouth, MI) with 19 kills. Erin Parrinello (JR/Westland, MI) added 14 kills and nine digs, while Daniella Barile (SO/Plymouth, MI) recorded a team-high 28 assists. Sabrina Giacomini (FR/Plymouth, MI) added 24 assists as the Wolverines showed their depth at the setter position. The UM-Dearborn defense was led by junior transfer Libero Heather Roberts (JR/Flint, MI) with 25 digs, while Caitlyn Carlson (JR/Armada, MI) and Samantha Nash (FR/Roseburg, OR) added 16 digs and 12 digs, respectively. 

In the finale of day one against Fisk, the Wolverines controlled the pace of play, led by Gina Giacomini and Shayla Smalls with nine kills each, while Sabrina Giacomini added 16 assists. Nash led the defense with 10 digs, while Carlson posted eight digs and three service aces. 

The Wolverines continue play at the Early Bird on day two with a pair of matches starting with Carlow University at 10 a.m. at the Fieldhouse.
