Wolverine offense shines in two wins over Penn State

DEARBORN, Mich.— The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's hockey team returned to action with a weekend series against the Penn State Nittany Lions at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse in Dearborn, Mich.

Saturday night saw a tightly contested matchup between the Wolverines and the Nittany Lions with UM-Dearborn taking the lead late in the second period. However, the Wolverines would strike six times in the third to blow the game wide open on their way to a 9-2 victory over Penn State in the first of two games between the teams.

Leading the way for UM-Dearborn was Leigh Farquhar with two goals and three assists in the game. Annie Schaffran scored her first career collegiate goal late in the first, helping the Wolverines regain the lead at the time and would add another in the third period, while Kaylee Keledjian would add two her own as well. Odisoula Argyris, Riley Vandenheuvel, and Cassidy Waugh would all record a goal and an assist, while Clare Murphy and Brooke Spiegel would add two assists each.

Victoria Hahn got the win in goal for UM-Dearborn, making 22 saves on the night.

Sunday afternoon's game script played out in similar fashion as the Wolverines would score late in the second period to go up one heading into the intermission. The two teams would trade off goals with Penn State coming back to tie the game twice in the third period. However, a late goal from Spiegel sealed the game with under three minutes remaining for UM-Dearborn on its way to a 5-4 win and a series sweep of the Nittany Lions.

Spiegel led the way for the Wolverines, also adding a second goal in the game. Argyris (1G,1A), Keledjian (2A), and Clare Murphy(1G, 1A) would also record two-point games, while Farquhar would add a short-handed tally in the third period.

Hahn got the start once again, earning the win for UM-Dearborn, while making 23 saves in the game.

The series sweep lifts the Wolverines record to 8-6-2 overall and 6-6-2 in conference play.
