UM-Dearborn shuts out UM-Ann Arbor in season opener

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's ice hockey team opened up the 2021-22 season Saturday night, taking on the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

UM-Dearborn would come out on top, scoring twice in the second period and adding one more in the third, on its way to a 3-0 win on opening night. 

Special teams made a difference as UM-Dearborn would connect twice on the power play, while also killing off eight Michigan-Ann Arbor power plays. 

Captain Brooke Spiegel would break the scoreless tie with her first of the season at the 3:44 mark of the second period. Cassidy Waugh and Clare Murphy. The Wolverines (UM-Dearborn) would strike again less than four minutes later when Odisoula Argyris connected on the power play Lexi Garbacik and newcomer Paige Findlay, giving UM-Dearborn a two-goal lead after two. Newcomer Riley Vandenheuvel would put it out of reach for the Wolverines, scoring the first of her career with assists from Findlay and Elizabeth Schaffran. The two assists from Findlay are the first points of her career. 

Newly appointed head coach Ken McMullen would earn his first career victory behind the bench for UM-Dearborn.  

Victoria Hahn got the win in goal for the Wolverines, earning the shutout, the fifth of her career. 

The win improves UM-Dearborn to 1-0-0 on the season and will return to action against Adrian College (ACHA) at 7:30 PM Thursday at Arrington Ice Arena in Adrian, Mich.
