Women’s Ice Hockey Wins in a Shootout over Grand Valley State

Dearborn, Mich. – The UM-Dearborn women's ice hockey team took to the ice on Friday night against the Grand Valley State Lakers.  After defeating Concordia 5-0 on Thursday, the Wolverines were looking to go 2-0 on the week.  The Lakers had other ideas as they took a 1-0 lead with a goal with just 55 seconds remaining the in the first period.  Grand Valley goalie Ally Kennedy made 12 saves in the first period as UM-Dearborn outshot the Lakers 12-5 in the opening stanza.

The second period saw more shots and more goals as the Wolverines finally solved Kennedy and scored twice in the period.  Senior Claudia Maguire scored a power play goal with 8:43 remaining in the second period to tie the score 1-1.  Sophomore Riley Vandenheuvel got the lone assist.  Just over two minutes later, UM-Dearborn would take the lead when junior Clare Murphy scored with Maguire assisting.  Grand Valley would strike again late in the period with just 57 seconds remaining to tie the game 2-2.  The Wolverines outshot the Lakers 14-8 in the second period.

The game would remain tied throughout the third period as UM-Dearborn junior goaltender Victoria Hahn and Grand Valley's Kennedy would not allow another goal in regulation.  Both goalies would again stand their ground in overtime forcing a shootout.  Michigan-Dearborn outshot Grand Valley 45-21 in the game.  In the shootout, Hahn again proved to be too strong for the Lakers stopping all three attempts by Grand Valley players.  UM-Dearborn senior Brooke Spiegel would net the lone goal in the shootout giving the Wolverines a 3-2 win.

The women's ice hockey team remains home next Friday as they play host to the Davenport University Panthers at 7:00pm at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
