Golden Eagles top Wolverines on Senior Day

DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team controlled the pace of play for the final 75 minutes against Cornerstone University, but three early goals from the Golden Eagles were too much for the Wolverines to overcome in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, Mich.

Cornerstone got goals from Kyle Doronbos and Garrett Nimmo, before an own goal put the Golden Eagles up 3-0 in the 17th minute. The score did not change, despite UM-Dearborn outshooting Cornerstone 15-9 in the match.

The game was Senior Day for the Wolverines, as seven outstanding student athletes were honored prior to kickoff. The game was the last in the Maize and Blue for Matt McCourt (SR/Trenton, MI), Michael Bowyer (SR/Rochester Hills, MI), John Mertic (SR/Chicago, IL), Hussein Hassan (SR/Dearborn, MI), Alek Vasilevski (SR/Shelby Township, MI), Erick Beas (SR/Canton, MI) and Aaron Johnson (SR/Ypsilanti, MI).

After heading into halftime down 3-0, the Wolverines had several chances in the second half to cut into the Cornerstone lead, but were unable to find a way to break through. Richard Hodnicki (JR/Southgate, MI) had a team-high five shots, with two on net. Tristan Johnson (FR/Taylor, MI) made two saves in net for the Wolverines.

UM-Dearborn closes the season 4-11 overall and 2-9 in the WHAC.
