Hodnicki scores three, Wolverines rally for win

ADRIAN, Mich. - For the first 54 minutes of the matchup between the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team and Siena Heights University the scoring was limited to a lone tally from the Saints Friday in Adrian, Mich.

From there the scoring exploded as UM-Dearborn picked up its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win of the season on the strength of four second-half goals, three from Richard Hodnicki (JR/Southgate, MI), including the game winner with 1:27 left on the clock. The win moves UM-Dearborn to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the WHAC.

After heading into the half down a goal, the Wolverines got their scoring barrage started with Hodnicki's first goal on a one-timer from six yards out on a feed from Scott Dunford (SO/Coventry, England) to tie the score in the 56th minute. Just under a minute later, UM-Dearborn took its first lead of the game on a Matt McCourt (SR/Trenton, MI) header from Jeffrey Drzyzga (JR/Grosse Ile, MI) and Dunford.

The lead was shortlived, as SHU got the equalizer from Rahber Khan one minute later, his second of the contest. The Saints went back on top in the 61st minute on a goal from Chris Ornelas.

From there Hodnicki took over with his second goal from Dunford with just over 20 minutes to play on a header off a free kick. The rapid scoring pace slowed until the dying minutes when Hodnicki secured the win with his hat-trick goal on another header off a cross from Alek Vasilevski (SR/Shelby Township, MI).

The Saints outshot the Wolverines 20-15 as Tristan Johnson (FR/Taylor, MI) picked up his first-career win in net for UM-Dearborn, making four saves.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play against Aquinas College at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
