Wolverine baseball opens play at RussMatt with DH

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball split a pair of games with Judson University on the team's first day at the RussMatt Invitational Saturday in Auburndale, Fla.

The Wolverines pulled away late in game one for an 8-1 victory, while the Eagles took control early in the finale and held on for a 10-2 victory. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 5-8 overall.

In the opener, Robert Begley got the scoring started with an RBI double in the second for the Wolverines, who added two in the fourth on RBI singles from Patrick Downing and Shane Fugate.

Up 4-1 in the sixth, UM-Dearborn added four runs, starting with a two-run single from Nathan Mack, while Evan Morin and Shaun Hannibal recorded one RBI each later in the inning. Morin and Ryan Beadle each finished with two hits.

Tyler Koons (3-0) followed up his no-hitter last weekend with another outstanding performance, tossing six innings, allowing one run on six hits, while walking one and striking out seven.

Game two saw the Eagles jump out to an early lead with six runs in the first. Justin Dolney picked up UM-Dearborn's lone RBI in the game with a double in the first.

John Dyda (1-3) took the loss on the mound with two innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on five hits, while walking two and striking out one.

UM-Dearborn takes on Robert Morris University at 10:30 am Sunday in Auburndale.
