HAMILTON, Ohio – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team opened the fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule with the first two of a four-game weekend series at Miami University-Hamilton Friday in Hamilton, Ohio.

The Wolverines powered ahead early in game one and held off a Harrier rally in the seventh inning to earn an 11-9 win. UM-Dearborn jumped out early in game two and cruised to a 9-2 victory for the opening day sweep and an early 2-0 record.

After MUH took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, UM-Dearborn answered with a three-run home run off the bat of senior Shaun Hannibal in the third to move in front.

The Wolverines put seven on the board in the fourth, starting with a three-run double from Andrew Capone. Antonio Carta, Patrick Downing, and Jacob Leija each added an RBI later in the frame before Justin Dolney hit his first home run of the season in the fifth to make it 11-1.

The Harriers scored seven times in the seventh and final inning to climb back in the game, but Tanner Hodges came in for the UM-Dearborn save (1), getting the final two outs of the game.

John Dyda started for the Wolverines and pitched three innings, allowing one run on one hit, walking four and striking out four. Tyler Troyer (1-0) earned the win, pitching three innings of relief.

MUH took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two before UM-Dearborn took over with five in the second and four in the third. Robert Begley got the offense started for the Wolverines in the second with a three-run double, followed by the first home run of the season for Capone, a two-run shot later in the inning.

Begley and Capone each added an RBI in the third, while Nathan Mack drove in two with a double.

Tyler Koons got the start and allowed one unearned run on two hits in three innings while walking one and striking out four. Jack Hook pitched three innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits, and striking out five.

The Wolverines play two more with the Harriers starting at noon Saturday in Hamilton, Ohio.
