Koons throws No-Hitter in Spring Opener

FLORENCE, Ky. – Tyler Koons made his spring debut for the University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team tossing the first no-hitter in program history in game two of a doubleheader against Robert Morris University on Saturday in Florence, Ky.

Koons faced the minimum 21 batters in the seven-inning game, with the only runner for Eagles reaching on an error and getting erased from the bases later in the inning. He struck out nine, including the final three batters of the game in an immaculate nine-pitch, nine-strike seventh. UM-Dearborn won game two 2-0 over the Eagles to split the doubleheader.

Both starting pitchers were strong early, as UM-Dearborn was held without a hit until fourth when three-straight Wolverine hits plated the game's first run capped by a Ryan Beadle RBI single. Justin Dolney gave the Wolverines some insurance with a solo home run to deep left field in the sixth.

Koons (2-0) finished with seven innings pitched, no hits and no walks, while striking out nine.

In the opener, UM-Dearborn held a 2-0 lead in the third, but the Eagles rallied with five unanswered to top the Wolverines 5-2. UM-Dearborn finished with 10 hits, including three from Andrew Capone. Dolney and Beadle each added two hits.

John Dyda (1-2) took the loss on the mound with four innings pitched, allowing four runs, three earned on four hits, while walking three and striking out six.

The series concludes with one 9-inning game at 8 am Sunday in Florence.
