UM-Dearborn baseball splits final two at Miami-Hamilton

HAMILTON, Ohio – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team continued a four-game weekend series with the final two contests at Miami University-Hamilton Saturday in Hamilton, Ohio.

The Wolverines cruised to a third straight victory to start the 2019-20 season in game one, 10-6 before MUH rallied for an 11-8 win in the finale to avoid the sweep. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 3-1 overall to open the 2019-20 season.

In game one, the Harriers opened the scoring with a run in the first and led 4-1 after the second. UM-Dearborn scored nine unanswered runs to take control, starting with an RBI double from Patrick Downing in the fourth. Carta cut the MUH lead to one with an RBI single in the fifth before Downing added a two-run single later in the inning to give UM-Dearborn the lead for good.

Shaun Hannibal drove in two runs for UM-Dearborn with a single in the sixth, while Max Tomaszewski and Andrew Capone each added an RBI in the seventh. MUH scored two in the final inning, but the Wolverines held on for the win.

Matthew Silka (1-0) was credited with the victory, pitching three scoreless innings of relief and striking out four in his UM-Dearborn debut.

The Wolverines led game two 7-4 after the second as the offense started fast. Justin Dolney, Ryan Beadle, and Robert Begley drove in a run in each of the first and second innings to push the UM-Dearborn lineup.

The Harriers scored three in the third to tie the score at 7-7 and took the lead in the sixth with three more. Clayton Durst (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Wolverines, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Wolverines continue the fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe, the University of Northwestern Ohio in a pair of nonconference games at 1 pm Sunday, Sept. 29 in Lima, Ohio.
