Wolverines sweep men's lacrosse WHAC honors

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2019 season, topping No. 6 Siena Heights University 16-15 at home on Saturday.

For their efforts, two Wolverines picked Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors, it was announced by the conference on Monday.

Senior attackman Devon Callaghan was named the WHAC Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman faceoff specialist Dillon Beal was named the Defensive Player of the Week. The honors are first for each student-athlete and first for the UM-Dearborn men's lacrosse program.

Callaghan led the Wolverine offense with seven goals and an assist, helping his team storm out to an early 7-0 lead over the Saints. In three games this season, Callaghan has 17 goals and two assists, while ranking first in the NAIA in goals per game at 5.67. He is just four goals away from 100 for his career.

Beal continues to dominate at the faceoff X for the Wolverines in his first season. He was a staggering 28-of-34 on face-offs against the Saints, including one in the final seconds of regulation to set up the game-winning goals, which he earned the assist on.

Beal also totaled a UM-Dearborn team record 22 ground balls. He leads the NAIA with 12.60 ground balls per game and is fifth in faceoff winning percentage at 68.7 percent.

Callaghan and Beal will move on to a national vote for NAIA Players of the Week, which will be announced Tuesday.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play against No. 3 Indiana Tech at 5 pm Wednesday at the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich.
