Wolverines drop season opener 16-14 to Scots

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's lacrosse team dropped a back-and-forth contest to Alma College in the 2019 season opener against Alma College Saturday at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse in Beverly Hills, Mich.

The Wolverines led 12-9 after three, outscoring the Scots 7-2 in the third quarter. Alma scored four straight to open the fourth and held on for a 16-14 win, dropping UM-Dearborn to 0-1 to open the season.

The contest saw several changes in momentum, including six ties and four lead changes. Last season's leading scorer Devon Callaghan started his senior season strong with six goals for the Wolverines, including three straight to erase a 7-4 deficit early in the third.

Junior Ben Phillips moved to attack prior to the season. He finished with three goals and two assists for UM-Dearborn, while sophomore Adam Ranck added two goals and two assists.

Micah Rinke, Justin Brodzik, and Cameron Godin each scored a goal from the midfield.

Faceoff specialist Dillon Beal had a strong debut for the Wolverines, winning 22-of-33 attempts. Liam Turner made 19 saves in net to start his junior season for the Wolverines.

Connor Alley led the Scots with six goals and an assist.

The Wolverines open Wolverines-Hoosier Athletic Conference play against league newcomer Cleary University at 2 pm Friday at the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich.
