CORNERSTONE TAKES SERIES WITH DH SWEEP OF WOLVERINES

SALINE, Mich. – Despite a pair of strong starting performances on the mound, the University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team dropped two games to Cornerstone University to end a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series Saturday at Saline High School in Saline, Mich.

The Wolverines allowed four in the seventh and two in the eighth, falling 6-1 in the opener, while the Golden Eagles rallied late with five unanswered runs to take the finale 7-4, earning the series victory. The sweep drops UM-Dearborn to 6-28 overall and 4-22 in the WHAC.

In the opener, Andrew Capone (FR/Warren, MI) singled home Cole VanWagoner (SO/Mancelona, MI) in the third inning to put the Wolverines up 1-0. UM-Dearborn starting pitcher Ramiro Rodriguez (FR/Southgate, MI) tossed six innings, allowing just one run on four hits while walking three and striking out four.

The Golden Eagles got a three-run double from Jarod Burton in the seventh to take their first lead of the game, holding on for the win.

Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead in the first on a home run from Burton, while the Wolverines answered with two in the third. Antonio Carta (SO/Allen Park, MI) tied the game with a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch later in the inning put UM-Dearborn up 2-1. Cornerstone got a solo home run from Jon Stewart in the fifth to tie the game.

Paul Husak Jr. (FR/Livonia, MI) and Shaun Hannibal (FR/Brighton, MI) each hit an RBI single in the sixth to put the Wolverines in front 4-2. Wolverine starting pitcher Cameron Tubbs (FR/Monroe, MI) went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking four and striking out four. Cornerstone scored five runs in the eighth to earn the win.

The Wolverines close the 2018 season with a three-game series against Concordia University starting with a doubleheader at 4 pm Tuesday at PAL Field, the former site of Tiger Stadium, in Detroit.
