OPENING WEEKEND CLOSES FOR WOLVERINES WITH LOSS AT LOURDES

TOLEDO, Ohio - The opening weekend of University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball came to a close on Sunday with the Wolverines wrapping up a three-game, Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series at Lourdes University Sunday at Mercy Field in Toledo, Ohio.

Lourdes jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Wolverines found a pair of runs in the third inning, but the Gray Wolves pulled away late for a 6-2 win to wrap up a three-game sweep of UM-Dearborn, which falls to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the WHAC. 

The Gray Wolves scored two in the first and one in the second before UM-Dearborn answered back with a pair of runs in the third. Andrew Capone (FR/Warren, MI) drove home Cole VanWagoner (SO/Mancelona, MI) on an RBI single up the middle. Capone scored later in the inning on a single to left off the bat of Daniel Kerr(JR/Macomb, MI). 

Lourdes extended its lead late with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. The Wolverines finished with two runs on nine hits and committed three errors, while Lourdes had six runs on 12 hits and one error. 

After a big day in his debut doubleheader on Saturday, Chase Turner (SR/Franklin, MI) finished 2-for-5 at the plate in the finale, while VanWagoner added two hits. Ryan Beadle (SO/Kalamazoo, MI) had the lone extra-base hit for the Wolverines with a double.

Dan Bos (FR/Livonia, MI) (0-1) took the loss in his debut on the mound for the Wolverines. He went three innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking five and striking out one. 

The Wolverines play their first home games against reigning WHAC champion the University of Northwestern Ohio, with two games scheduled for Saturday and one for Sunday. The Wolverines and Racers will play two games on Saturday starting 5 p.m., along with another on Sunday at 5 p.m., with all games to be played at Fisher Stadium on the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
